A peek at the new neighbors 7 months ago

See all of the twigs sticking out of the eaves of the house? These wrens are diligent workers!

I read in the book Animal Speak that wrens are highly adaptable; they are the ultimate in resourceful. They enjoy what they have and don’t worry about what they don’t have. I like that message.

A pic of the pre-lush. Garden, that is. 7 months ago

You can’t see it all, but there are 9 pots, 7 long boxes, a deck box/seat and a tiny birdhouse that recently has become occupied with tiny wrens (with beautiful songs!) The dill is already becoming unwieldy, will take some to dry soon.

Imagine what I could do with an actual plot of land….

Soon... 7 months ago

I’ll be doing some sympathetic garden magick. All I have is a tiny deck, 6 ft wide, 3 ft deep but this week I’m getting my herb seedlings from the local growers. Each year for the past few years I’ve grown 13 herbs, grape tomatoes and been taking care of baby trees I got from the Arbor Day Foundation. This year I started some Morning Glories and Moonflowers from seed in hopes of having them climb and giving me some privacy from nosy neighbors.

Someday I hope to have walking gardens with gravel paths, simple water features, benches, a sundial…you get the idea. But for now, I’ll start with what I’ve got. Just looking at my little herb plants and tending to them gently every day does so much for me, I can’t even express it. Unfathomable joy.

Today of all days... 10 months ago

...when it’s 30mph winds and the temp is under 20, I’m thinking of my garden and what’s going in it this year. Last year, along with everything else in my life, it didn’t go very well. Too many varieties, and it was cluttered and just…eh. I only have a 3×6 deck to work with, so space is precious. I want to grow stuff I’ll really use a lot this year, and some colorful flowers that make me smile.

Trying to think of a way to create more growing places without it being so messy and disorganized. I want a lush mini-jungle of privacy to read in, hidden from the neighbor’s constant gaze. (“Whatcha doin’? Readin’ or sum’in? Whatcha readin? Oh a book? What book?” etc.)

I miss my shade tree. Bastard condo management.
