Whole foods

Continuing on from the previous post, I’m still thinking a lot about this. I’m snacking on fruit and vegetables instead of biscuits and lollies, and I’m already seeing a difference. I don’t have fierce sugar cravings anymore.

We did order pizza last night, but the one we happen to like has quite a few veggies and a lot less cheese on it than most. We only have takeout once a week at most anyway :)

I like the fact that the advice given for eating more whole foods is so simple:

1.Eat more fruits & vegetables, preferably ones sourced locally and in season.
2. When buying packaged foods, buy ones that have 5 ingredients or less. If it reads more like a science experiment, don’t buy it.

I followed the second recommendation today and it was scary! I like to buy Cadbury’s brunch bars in case I don’t have time to pack anything to take with me. But looking at the length of the ingredient list, I won’t be buying them again:

Milk Chocolate (25%) (Sugar, Dried Whole Milk, Cocoa Butter, Cocoa Mass, Dried Whey, Vegetable Fat, Emulsifiers (E442, E476), Flavourings), Oats (17%), Invert Sugar Syrup, Bran Flakes (9%) (Cracked Wheat, Wheat Bran, Sugar, Malt Extract, Salt), Glucose Syrup, Hazelnuts (9%), Vegetable Oil, Crispy Cereal (6%) (Wheat Flour, Rice Flour, Sugar, Dextrose, Salt), Honey (2%), Humectant (Glycerine), Salt, molasses, Emulsifiers (E471, Soya Lecithin)

I'm not dieting as such,

but I am thinking more about how processed some of the food and drink I consume is. To that end, I’m trying to eat foods that are closer to their natural state.

-White rice replaced with brown
-No more daily fruit juice/cordial. I wanted juice the other morning, so squeezed some oranges instead.
-Wholegrain crackers instead of white

I’ve also made a kind of sub-goal in my head to always have fresh fruit in the house. (I usually do, but then I eat it and reach for something else instead).

Slow steps :)

Hair

I’m thinking of getting my hair cut shorter. Not ridiculously so, but maybe enough so I can’t put it up in a ponytail anymore. My problem is that I have extremely thick, wavy hair, so I’m not sure if cutting my hair short will make me look like a boofhead, ha.

Well. That was amazing and disquieting

While fluffing around the internet tonight, I came across this survey: http://slaveryfootprint.org/survey/#where_do_you_live which tells you how many slaves you have working for you. Apparently I have 33.

I've just joined care2.com

last night. While I am kind of confused about HOW it works, I’m excited that something like this exists.

Somehow just by creating an account I provided a day of safe drinking water for a child…

Scary

Last night I found a lump in my breast. It hurts when I press it :(

Weird dreams

Last night I had a weird dream about my wedding. Mum had planned and organised everything, so consequently there were people there who I didn’t want there. One of my bridesmaids (who were all wearing awful pouffy yellow dresses) turned to me and said “What happened to the wedding that YOU wanted?”

Sigh

There’s a new girl at work. She’s young, picks things up quickly and is relatively friendly. However, I also find her to be quite cocky and I don’t know… she acts like she’s entitled to certain things. Like just going out the back when she feels like it. Which, frankly, is irritating. Anyway.

Tonight she kept moving on to another job before she’d finished the one that she’d started. Or left a job to go on the till which she doesn’t know how to do yet, but keeps jumping up to it anyway. After a few hours of this, it began to get on my nerves. So when she (very eagerly) volunteered to take an order outside to a customer I said

“No, you need to learn to finish one job before moving onto the next.”
“But you can just come back to it.”
“No, it gets in the way.”

Frankly, I was pissed off that she answered me back as she did. And I don’t think I was wrong either. Now she probably thinks I’m a bitch. Oh well. Que sera sera.

I was rather amused

tonight at work when I young girl (about 8 or 9) came up to the counter to make an order. When I told her that unfortunately we don’t do grilled fish, she said

“Oh, I’ll just have 4 dollars of chips then as I have my family waiting out in the car.”

Patiently I waited as she, with difficulty, dug out the change from her right pocket. Seeming to feel the need to fill the relative silence with conversation, she mused

“Steggles? Huh, not the best quality, but I am used to organic chicken.”

Smiling to myself and shaking my head slightly, I cooked her order.

Powdered or liquid detergent?

As I was putting a load of washing on this afternoon, it occurred to me that I’d like to know which version of washing powder was more environmentally-friendly: powder or liquid.

After a quick google search, I found that powder is the better option as
  • The packaging is recyclable
  • You’re not paying for water as you do with liquid
  • It’s easier to measure and not use too much
  • Cheaper to transport
