I’ve had the sweater knitted up for a month, but haven’t managed to get out to a store to buy buttons. The baby was born in October and so now I am beginning to worry that she’ll outgrow the sweater, so I am going to see if I can’t choose some buttons this weekend.
As to the stripes: I ended up not going with a full spectrum of crayon box colors. The infant sized baby surprise jacket is just too small of a canvas for that. When I tried a bunch of intense colors, it looked too much like a clown costume. I went with a cream background, and deep green stripes with a pinstripe of bright green inside the green stripes.

A friend from yoga teacher training is expecting her first baby, and wants to learn to knit. So I’n teaching her! We’re making the baby surprise jacket as her first project, since it is garter stitch. (Increases and decreases for shaping? We’ll tackle those, too.) I’ve never knit one of these before, so I’ll work up one in fingering weight yarn to see how the pattern goes; and my friend can knit hers in worsted weight for a toddler’s size, and work at her own pace. I am really excited about this!
I cast on this morning and knit 7 rows. I’m thinking I’ll do a striping pattern using crayon box colors … I started knitting with a deep red, something in stash left over from another project … but my mind keeps imagining all sorts of different striping color combinations …. I might actually cast on for a second colorway, and see what develops ….
