I got to hike/climb up Lions Head in Cape Town (667m) on a recent trip. Turned out expensive. My water bottle top was not properly tightened and my cell phone got soaked and is no more.
The climb was moderate and very worth while as an alternative to climbing up Table Mountain. The views of the Table front and the Twelve Apostles – in one sweeping view – are spectacular.
There are a couple of narrow ledges to negotiate but chains are provided to stop you flying into eternity! Nothing a fit person can’t handle.

Not three hours by car from where I live, there is a relatively easy way to the top of the Drakensburg escarpment. The top is in excess of 10000 ft and offers superb views back over KwaZulu-Natal and the Tugela falls.
The nearest car park takes you within 2000 ft of the summit. The first part is a hike, rather than a climb. Now all I need is the courage to climb the 100-rung chain ladder that goes up the last part of the sheer cliff face.
