“I am the awareness behind my thoughts.” Descartes got it wrong it seems with his famous line, “I think, therefore I am.” Most of our thoughts are manifestations of the ego, judging and living in the past of future.
E. Tolle has pointed out that our real selves are the awareness that we are having thoughts, not the thoughts themselves. It’s a profound exercise to spend some time having no thoughts and see how that feels. I try to imagine a blank, grey, featureless room and suppose that all thoughts would show up as something new in that room. I wait and when my ego is aware that I am watching it produce new thoughts, very few come. Then, I get to feel what it’s like to have “no thoughts” for a brief time.

I think it was he who said, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and hoping for a different result.”
Obviously, no one in the Bush Administration has read any of Einstein’s quotes.
