volunteer for the Nature Conservancy

I put in all the future volunteer dates on my calendar, so now I will see if I’m accidentally scheduling something on that day.

They also double up and do two volunteer days each month through the fall, so I’m hopeful that I’ll get there before the year is over.

Found a friend who is willing to go with me in July. I also got some new work gloves today (gardening and leather) so I’m set!

July 11 is the date I’m shooting for…

and now we’re in town but I have too much to do this weekend.

We are DEFINITELY in town the next weekend because we are going to a baseball game that night, so hopefully I’ll get there July 11th. Just watch, my luck it’s going to be 85 degrees and humid that day…

I’m going to hand out a sheet during my birthday party that lists this volunteering opportunity and a free lecture about the global food crisis that I want to go to. Maybe that way I can find a few friends to go to both…

I am a marginal member of the nature conservancy (like, $15 a year). Their magazine is beautiful and really informative. But I was so inspired to see that they have local volunteering opportunities…i thought they would only have hired biology people. There is a managed prairie about an hour from my house and I think I would learn a ton there about native plants (being that you have to be taught what to pull as well as what not to pull). Plus, there’s nothing quite as satisfying as an ass-kicking day of physical outdoor work…you come home and shower and then have pizza or grill out…

It’s also just a “show up” opportunity. I’m hoping to make the date in June, and I’m really hoping I can find a friend who would like to drive down with me. I currently do no kind of nature volunteering and I would like to balance out my volunteering with things I’m passionate about.
