Truthiness 2 years ago

Stephen Colbert made up this word, and then it became Merriam-Webster’s word of the year! From Wikipedia: “Truthiness is a satirical term invented by Stephen Colbert in reference to the quality by which a person claims to know something intuitively, instinctively, or “from the gut” without regard to evidence, logic, intellectual examination, or actual facts”.

One word a week (at least) 3 years ago

I sort of forgot about this goal for a while, but I’m back at it! I think one word a week is a good pace for me, since I can take my time and read about its origin and history, which helps me remember it. All my words will be listed on my blog’s Weekly Word section.

I should also read more often, but I haven’t made the time for that just yet. I’ll get around to it. :)

A fun vocabulary site 3 years ago

Celebrity English mixes celebrity news with English lessons—check out the vocabulary section! I found some of the news items to be pretty funny, and the vocabulary words are all useful. The RSS feed makes a great addition to whatever word-of-the-day feeds you might subscribe to.

Keep a list of the new words you learn 3 years ago

That’s what I’m doing, and so far I’ve found it quite helpful. I’m keeping my list here.

Words are easy enough to find—there must be at least 10 word-a-day services out there, plus endless word lists, vocabulary podcasts, web colummns, and all that (I’m keeping a list of those resources, too).

The tricky part is to actually remember all the new words you come across, and that just takes practice and patience. I’m learning, though, even if it’s just one word at a time!
