Waiting for that damn bus 3 years ago

‘There are long quiet periods in life that are very much like waiting for a bus on a nice day. You don’t mind being there so much because the weather is sunny and nice, and you’re in no hurry. But after a while you start looking at your watch because there are more interesting things you could be doing, and it really is time the bus came.’ – Jonathon Carroll

Well as I stated in the question I asked about this goal, I’m still in the middle of an enormous amount of free time, after having to defer part of my degree. Some days I truly feel like I am going insane, and I’m still trying to find meaningful ways to fill in my time.

Over the weekend I was looking into TAFE courses which I can do via correspondence or distance learning. (Doing an actual TAFE course on campus wouldn’t work, because by the time the next TAFE semester starts I’ll be back at uni). I rang up and enquired about a Certificate 4 course this morning but as it turns out, the application process will take a month or so, and its almost impossible to do the course properly if you’re not already working in the industry (it’s a community service type thingy). Anyway, as it turns out, it won’t really be feasible which is pretty disheartening. I really thought I’d found something useful to do over the next 7 weeks.

Anyway, I called up another place that is advertising for volunteers to work overnight at a homeless shelter. I’ve been interested in working with homeless people since my last student placement, however the organisation I really wanted to volunteer at only provided an email address, and they still have not replied to my offer to volunteer. So anyway, I’ve just called this other organisation and I’m going in tomorrow night for an hour or so to see what it’s like at this shelter.

I also phoned the Australian Red Cross Blood Service (13 14 95). About donating blood. I’ve just registered as a blood donor and I’m going in to donate on thursday. It isn’t the most exciting thing to do but I figure I’ve got no excuse not to, and I kept coming across their advertising campaign while I was looking at all the volunteer advertisements.

Well anyway, I’m not sure if any of these things are helping me to ‘live instead of exist’ but its better than sitting around watching Oprah and or driving down the coast for hours on end with nothing to do and no destination, which I have been doing a lot of lately.
