be more involved in my community

I’m reading books to 5 and 6 year olds one hour per week this summer for SPROG.

I agreed to be an advisor for our new community OASIS center—hard to refuse a nice letter from the mayor and the director of the library asking me to do it! OASIS provides volunteer opportunities and education for people over 50. I’ve been to one meeting and they seemed to like my suggestions. I’ve committed to attending two or three meetings a year and to throwing ideas their way whenever I have them.

In 2009, I will continue to attend dialogue and book club meetings of the Community for Understanding and Healing that was formed after the tragic shooting at Kirkwood City Hall. I will add another book club to that—a series sponsored by the public library called Let’s Talk About It, Love and Forgiveness in the Light of Death.

• accepted an invitation to be part of the planning for a Book Club by the local library. Our library got an ALALet’s Talk About It grant. We’ll be doing the Love and Forgiveness in the Light of Death topic in response to the City Hall shooting earlier this year.

I’d say this is about as involved as I’m capable of!

I went to a party last night with a bunch of people I don’t know. But they’re food bloggers so we ate well and talked about blogging and I got some sourdough starter. Just the kinds of things I want from a community.
