(LL) is reading Gulliver’s Travels… and making every effort to resist the urge to gouge out her own eyes.
Late last year, I picked up Jonathon Swift’s classic amongst a selection of books at my cousin’s book club. At the time I thought, “hey, I know this story. Should be a breeze.”
Little had I realised just how much punctuation from the 1730s could frustrate me. Basically, every noun is capitalised, which drives me nuts (something akin to my standard ‘bread-crumbs in the butter’ response).
I only managed to read a few pages, before putting the book aside. Perhaps needless to say, I didn’t take this one with me when I went to spend time with Matty. But I’ve decided that I should finish the darn thing… so for two days in a row, I’ve read it on the bus trip to work and home again. So far, so good. (Eyes still in situ.)
Apart from that, I also need to finish off Francis Mayes’ A Year in the World, and Alistair Horne’s The Seven Ages of Paris. Not sure why I’m procrastinating on the former. I think it’s because I was annoyed with one of her chapters, which comprised of a letter to a friend… it just went on, and on, and on… you get the picture. Anyhoo, can’t tick them off until I’ve finished!
