(LL) is reading Gulliver’s Travels… and making every effort to resist the urge to gouge out her own eyes.

Late last year, I picked up Jonathon Swift’s classic amongst a selection of books at my cousin’s book club. At the time I thought, “hey, I know this story. Should be a breeze.”

Little had I realised just how much punctuation from the 1730s could frustrate me. Basically, every noun is capitalised, which drives me nuts (something akin to my standard ‘bread-crumbs in the butter’ response).

I only managed to read a few pages, before putting the book aside. Perhaps needless to say, I didn’t take this one with me when I went to spend time with Matty. But I’ve decided that I should finish the darn thing… so for two days in a row, I’ve read it on the bus trip to work and home again. So far, so good. (Eyes still in situ.)

Apart from that, I also need to finish off Francis Mayes’ A Year in the World, and Alistair Horne’s The Seven Ages of Paris. Not sure why I’m procrastinating on the former. I think it’s because I was annoyed with one of her chapters, which comprised of a letter to a friend… it just went on, and on, and on… you get the picture. Anyhoo, can’t tick them off until I’ve finished!

Actually...  — 2 years ago

... not as dire as I thought! I remembered a couple more books I’d read over the last 12 months. Jodi Picoult’s “My Sister’s Keeper” (gorgeous story, tear-jerker) and Mireille Guiliano’s “French Women Don’t Get Fat” (from which I learned the valuable advice to enjoy my food, make sure my diet is in balance, and to reduce my proportions… ie. eat until I’m satisfied, not until I’m full).

I’m sure there must be more that I’ve forgotten. Currently in the middle of the Lonely Planet “By The Seat Of My Pants”... hilarious stuff! ;-D

Need to keep the momentum going...  — 2 years ago

I was doing fairly well with this for a while. Still haven’t got to any of the classics that I’d like to read (hmmm, perhaps should add a ‘list of’ to my list), but have read a few good ones over the past couple of months: Merde Actually; I Have A Bed Made Of Buttermilk Pancakes (yes, that’s actually the title, a lovely little Aussie story)... hmm, actually, that’s it – not so impressive after all.

On reflection, I think I may be confusing books I’ve purchased to read for those I’ve actually read… getting a bit ahead of myself, it seems ;-)
