I’ve been with my husband 5 years now and I still don’t know Portuguese. We visited his family in Brazil in March 2005 and, while they were surprised by how much I understood, I was frustrated by my inability to really communicate with them. I bought a Teach-Yourself-Brazilian-Portuguese kit—I just need to make the time to use it.
