Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

Rides to church

I have volunteered to take the family from Burma to church every Sunday. Since we go to church and it is only a couple of miles out of my way, I am happy to do it. They don’t speak much english and I don’t speak Burmese; so it is a little quiet on the way to and from church. I was going to offer to take them to the grocery store when they needed to go, but since I work two jobs I don’t have a lot of free time. I will find out if they want to go to the grocery store when I go.

Not contributing much right now

I don’t seem to have any free time to do something for my community. I would like to get involved in some programs that give back, but right now my financial situation has to come first. I am looking for opportunities that will fit into my schedule. I am looking for materials to help the ESL people at my work. A couple of people asked me if I could help them learn to read. We could do it on their lunch break during work. We are so slow at work right now; the boss wouldn’t mind if we spent time doing that.

PADS at Hesesd House early this morning.

I had signed up to work the 4 am to 7 am shift this morning at the homeless shelter. My church asks for volunteers to serve dinner and breakfast for the homeless shelter residents 1 time a month. I have always thought it was something I would like to do, but this was the first time I did the breakfast shift. I met a bunch of people from my church that go to a different mass. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and felt like I was contributing to society. There are a lot of interesting people in my city. I was fortunate to meet several residents of the homeless shelter that reminded me how fortunate I am and how sometimes we have to be our brothers keeper.

I am going to serve lunch at the food pantry. I have arranged to have Monday and Tuesday off so I can attend a lecture at my church. My mother and father are going to the lecture which is being held at my church. The Priest giving the lecture was at my mother and father’s church for many years. He came across town to live at our church and he is now semi retired. He is a good speaker, and he is dedicated to God and helping the poor. I have never met a more Godly man; so I am excited to get to here him speak again. He was the Priest that told me I should be doing more to help those less fortunate than myself. He said that would help remind me of all that I do have. He is right.

Trying to get myself involved

I am currently focusing on the breast cancer fundraising walk, and I hope to get involved in other fundraising efforts that acutally are using the proceeds for the purpose they were raised. I also found out that the church is looking for eucharistic ministers, food pantry workers, and homeless shelter sitters. I am a little nervous about being a sitter at the homeless shelter, but it is something I should do as they have a hard time getting enough people. I should talk to the church secretary and see who is in charge of all these programs. I am headed over there today.

At Reconciliation

the Priest suggested that I do a little more for people that are less fortunate then myself. I know that this is something I need to work on and make time for in my life. I have been ignoring the little voice in my head that seems to be getting louder. It keeps telling me to become part of the solution not part of the problem. I suppose I will have to listen to the Priest and my inner voice. What to do; What to do?

Stopped by the school

I stopped in and helped the teacher get all of the kids into their costumes today. It was Halloween and they were having a parade around the school. Getting a classroom full of children into their costumes was a bit to much for the teacher. I told them I would stop by and help out. I got much thanks and felt like I contributed to the school by stopping and helping out. I want to do more things like this as our school is small and lacks the personnel to help the teachers. I told her to call me any time she needs help and if I am capable of meeting her needs I will be there. The teacher asked if I would be available on bookmobile days as she needs someone in the classroom while she is on the bookmobile with the kids still picking out books.

I am going to form a plan of action

to give back. I live in controlled chaos right now. I need to spend the next couple of days getting the house, my family, and myself in order enough so that I can set aside some time for giving or doing for others. I found out that I have Saturday off and only work Sunday this weekend. I will use Saturday to figure out where I am going to start. I am too self absorbed and need to get to a place where I do for others on a regular basis.

Need to give back

I changed this goal from friend to Citizen because I don’t really have any “friends”. I have family and I have the community I live in. I was going over my resume and realized that since my husband died I have been a little self absorbed. I am going to start serving lunch at the food pantry on Fridays or another day depending on what they need. I have signed up for several volunteer positions at church. I am looking into teaching ESL and I have a co-worker who has asked for help learning to read and write english. I would like to help him.
