Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

Remembering Mom

This year I planted the loveliest deep red geraniums. Today, I dug them up and planted them in pots to winter over inside my house. My Mom used to do this with her geraniums and impatiens.

Digging up

my funny little round garden today. My husband had observed that there are quite a few round gardens in the area, memorials to past children’s swimming pools.

I’ll definitely plant some crocus bulbs. I need that first bloom of spring. Then I’d like to have some midseason blooms, probably daffodils. To finish out spring, I’ll plant multi-colored tulips. Still, I’m not sure if I want my tulips to be bright or pastel.

Now I’m getting excited!

Check off..

I had a garden. It was not as nice as I would have liked. I’m taking notes for future gardens.

In mid-October, I plan on planting bulbs for the spring. This is something I have not really done before. The idea of spring blooming in my yard seems attractive to me now.

Otherwise, I’m retiring this goal until next year.

Odd kind of year for me..

I love getting outside and digging and watching the progress of my garden. But this year it isn’t exactly what I had hoped.

My back yard garden looks shaggy. It’s weedy. And the weeds seem to love the hot weather. Things I found easier to grow in other years have failed, for example my cosmos. I planted shasta daisies that I can’t keep alive. Is it too hot? Am I watering too much? Too little? Not fertilizing correctly? Hopefully, things will even out in August.

My front garden is doing well. It is a little overcrowded. I need to take some pictures and make some notes for next year.

I’m growing basil in a pot, and it is spectacular. My dill and cilantro are failing. My parsley, rosemary, and thyme are doing okay.

A new occurrence...

I’m finding that the birds are coming to feed in my garden while I am outside, about 15 feet away. Two years ago, the birds would fly away if I opened my back door. Last year, they remained feeding when I stood on my porch. Now I can fill the feeders, and I can dig in the garden with the birds calmly perched at the feeders. I think that’s pretty cool!

It's all Flirts fault

I was NOT going to plant any flowers started from seeds. Then Flirt goes about spreading sunflower joy throughout 43T, and I get this tickle, this urge that says “You’ve gotta plant sunflowers.” And, after all, I do have birds to feed.

So yesterday, when I went on my Lowe’s visit, there they were, sunflower seeds and seed starting kits. This morning I got my act together and started the seed sprouting journey. Wish me luck. Maybe I’ll be able to nurture them better this year, keeping them strong before planting them in my garden. But besides these, NO MORE SEEDS!

Thanks, Flirt! I really mean it. Thanks for bringing joy to our 43T community!

Digging

It has been a lovely day for playing in the garden. I have been able to identify quite a few perennials returning. I transplanted some coreopsis, which I hope will be safe. They were in the shadow of my butterfly bush. The butterfly bush has one little speck of green on it, so I remain hopeful for a good future. My ever reliable salvia is up and green. I’ve found bits of bee balm creeping around the garden. The lilies I transplanted last year are up. They leave me with good memories, because I transplanted them evening before I left to take care of my mother last year.

There’s lots of lovely worms in my garden today. That reminds me, I need to go to The Bug Store and buy some garden friendly bugs and worms.

Ah, it’s a dirt under my finger nails kind of day!

Sassy Robins

They’re back! And I love ‘em. They have very little fear of the tall red haired woman in their habitat. Spring is coming!

Some garden thoughts

The weather is steadily improving and I am moving more toward my garden. Every day I am making little improvements. This nurtures my soul.

I received a $100.00 gift card to Lowe’s for my birthday. This will provide me with quite a bit of garden planning entertainment.

I took some pictures of shame today. Hopefully, I will take pictures every week or so to follow my progress. Maybe later I’ll post before and after shots.

Itching

I am starting to plan my garden for this year. Maybe I’ll plant some seeds in pots. Otherwise, I think I’ll use established plants. I’m looking forward to seeing how my perennials from previous years are doing.

My husband asked what I want for my birthday. Honestly, I just want a Lowe’s gift certificate so that I can spend with some abandon in the garden department.
