make a difference

It’s an 80 hour course about teaching adults basic literacy and numeracy. When I complete the course, I to work as a volunteer adult literacy teacher for 2 hours a week.

The course is this March, and then I can start teaching. I’m a bit scared since I’m quite shy. But hopefully I’ll enjoy it as well as helping someone else.

Why am I doing this? Well, reading is something I’ve always loved to do, ever since I was a kid. I can spend whole days reading. Since I love it so much, I think it would be great if I could share that with someone else.

Plus not being able to read is something that is really stigmatisted in society. Literacy is pretty much essential for getting a good job, but because of the stigma, adults who can’t read are often ashamed to admit it and ask for help.

I figure teaching someone to read is a way of really making a difference to their lives.
