Caught some irish music competition on the toob yesterday and noticed some very different bow grips – so I picked up my fiddle and tried them out. Still just doing C scales right now.

I paid $50 to have the $40 violin fixed up, and then coughed up another $30 or so for a student bow. I’m following some online beginner lessons and can now play a pretty crappy C scale. I’ve got to say, in my experience playing several instruments, the worst instrument to listen to a beginner play is the violin. Hard to motivate to practice – thinking maybe I’ll make a deal with my daughter to practice when she practices piano.
I got the violin fixed – and it only cost $50. I still need a bow., the shop had a $100 bow but I didn’t want to spend that much. They were out of student bows so I’m still without a complete insturment.
I also bought the book “The Technique of Violin PLaying” by Courvisier (sp?).
After playing with it for a while I’ll probably want to find somewhere to take some lessons.

Suzy bought me a Violin almost a year ago at an antiques auction, but it’s was just the violin and the case – no strings or bow. It needs some work I think, but I’d love to get it working to just begin to learn. I can play a bunch of insturments, but nothing “fretless” as of yet.
