...it’s because I can’t imagine how lonely it must be to speak a language no one (or very few people around you) speak. I currently work at a resort and being in the hospitality industry (though I have NO desire to make it my career), knowing ASL would be beneficial for myself and my guests. I’ve checked in 2 guests in the last 2 months who are deaf and I would love to have surprised them by telling them, in sign language, that they didn’t need to write down what they needed to say and that they could just tell me. I remember being with my brother’s friend, Deb, up in Prescott, AZ one summer – Deb speaks French (with a British-Australian accent – haha) – and we were in this little cafe called St. Michael’s when a woman and her young daughter walked in. The mom sounded like she was consoling the pouting girl and Deb walked over to them and started asking the little girl questions in French. That little girl LIT UP. It was really heartwarming. I’d love to be that for someone someday, even if only once and only for a moment.
