direct a big musical

We’ve planned out our company a little bit more now. My husband and I wrote a musical that we’re going to be performing in September (man that’s coming up soon!). That will be performed in Tucson at a small theatre that is giving us great rates. We estimated that if we advertise like crazy and manage to fill the house each night, we’ll make about 400 dollars (not counting gas money which would probably make our profit zero!). Not too much, but enough to put toward another show. Then, over Christmas I may or may not do a show. If so, it would probably be the Gift of the Magi and it would just be the two of us. It needs to be cheap to put on, so we can make a profit, because I’m planning on a big musical in the spring, in the community where we live (about an hour south of Tucson). Haven’t decided which one yet. Then, in the summer I’m going to do a drama camp for kids and put on Aladdin Jr. After that it’s up in the air, but I really want to do The Best Christmas Pageant Ever next Christmas. I think next year maybe I’ll do that one, a musical in the spring, and the summer camp again, and by then we could be moving and/or starting a family, so we’ll see what happens! My plan is to do whatever I can now, and then when I have small children, keep the summer camp going because my husband has his summers off and can watch the kids while I do that. I hope that’s how it works out, because I think that would be perfect!!!

So I’m not going to do the show that the theatre offered me, but I am starting my own theatre company! I plan on directing a big community musical in the spring, and then I’m going to do a summer camp musical for kids next summer. So it will be a little while before then, but this goal will definitely be completed within the year.

So the theatre we’re doing shows at right now offered me a play to direct in the fall. It would be really fun, and it’s a hilarious play, and I think I’m going to do it. Not a musical, but that’s okay. It looks like most of my time in the near future is going to be spent directing shows. There will probably be two musicals at my husband’s school this next year, so hopefully I will be able to direct them.

I directed Godspell Jr with 12 6-9th graders, and that was the most rewarding experience of my career thus far. However, I want to direct more, bigger shows.
