This year I had a backyard and was able to start a couple of compost heaps. One was in an old metal wheel barrow, the other on the ground. It was an interesting experience, having the two to compare. The one in the container did much better and decomposed much more uniformly than the one on the ground. When I can get a job, I’d like to buy an actual compost container
On the recycling front, very little of the waste generated by my boyfriend and myself is getting thrown away. Most everything that can be reused is being reused. Unfortunately, everything that can be recycled is being kept but not taken to be recycled. I have offered to my roommates to pay the $10/month to pay local business to pick up our household recycling every two weeks (well, actually, asked if they’d chip $2 in every month since there are five of us), but no one seems keen on the idea. They think that they won’t get their bottle deposits back, which would be valid if the company in question took pop bottles. The company only takes what you take to the curb for pick up – paper, cardboard, glass jars and household (not food grade) plastics. Oh well… I’ll take a look at my budget and see what I can do there – I’d like to have a job first.
