After leaving my job at the newspaper and overdosing on Obama election coverage, I took a break from all things newsy for quite a while. It wasn’t intentional; it was actually just a side effect of hanging out with someone who didn’t have cable. But over the past few weeks I’ve been slowly reacquainting myself with the world’s happenings.
I was always really aware of bias in the media, but is it just me or has it actually gotten worse since Obama took office? Maybe I’m just noticing it more because I’ve got fresh eyes, but my god, how do people know anything about what’s going on if they only watch the news on television? I know every outlet has its own agenda, but I can’t imagine how limited a person’s world view would be if they really did depend on one station to let them know what’s going on.
I’ve realized that now is not the time to be disconnected, but I had forgotten how much effort it really takes to get the WHOLE story. That’s a big time investment. I’ve got to find a way to get the news without having to compare every outlet’s (TV, newspapers, magazines) version of the truth to find out what I really believe is going on.
