Eeek! We have an appointment at the bank today to see how much we qualify for. Matt really wants to buy a house, but I just don’t think that now is the right time. He’s headed back to school in January & I don’t want to worry about mortgage payments while he’s in school. I also want to be further out of debt before we add a mortgage payment ‘cuz obviously it will be a lot higher than our current rent payment. I agreed to go to the bank to see what we will qualify for though. That way, we will know our price range & maybe start looking at houses as soon as he’s done school in March.
And although that’s what I’m thinking, Matt’s found a house in the north end of town (picture above) that he really likes & he wants to buy it now. I’m not quite as gung ho about it, but in all fairness, I haven’t really seen the inside. We have stopped by & taken a look at the front & back yards, but we’ve only seen the inside online, not in person. He’s happy ‘cuz it’s got a garage & that was his only stipulation. And it does have the 3 bedrooms & 2 bathrooms that I want (at least according to the real estate listing). It doesn’t have a garden, but I’m sure that once Matt replaced the fence in the backyard, I could tear out a small section of the lawn area in the corner of the yard & put a garden in there. I would want the trees in the front yard removed & replaced with different ones & the fence in the front would need to be changed as well. Oh & the shingles on the roof of the house clearly need to be redone, but the shingles on the garage are still in good shape. And all this stuff costs money (of which we have none). But the price is really, really good and that would hopefully allow us to be able to do those couple of things. And obviously they wouldn’t need to be done overnight, LOL. I really wonder what it looks like in person on the inside ‘cuz obviously pictures online don’t show the whole story. And it really is so much cheaper than most of the other places listed (& it’s here in town, not in Grimshaw, so yay for that!) Hopefully that doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with it though. I asked Brenda if she knew anything about it ‘cuz her parents live just down the street & she said that hadn’t heard anything about that particular house, but she did add that her parents love the neighbourhood, so that’s a good thing.
The biggest obstacle against us buying a house though is that we have absolutely nothing for a down payment. That’s another one of the main reasons I want to buy a house later after Matt’s done school. I want to save up some money for the next six months. I do think that my parents would lend us the down payment (after all, they co-signed for Amanda & Wayne’s house) but I would rather that Matt & I do it all on our own. And I know Matt feels that way as well.
I guess we’ll just wait & see what happens at the bank this afternoon.
