here’s what this cgc thing is all about (from the american kennel club website):
“Started in 1989, CGC is a certification program that is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.”
here is what i will have to do well in order to earn it:
- accept a friendly stranger (i am already good at that!)
- sitting politely for petting (never a problem!)
- appearance and grooming (of course i always look my best, but apparently i also will need to be comfortable letting a stranger handle and groom me a little. yeah. well, we’ll just see about that.)
- walking on a loose lead (i’m pretty good at that)
- walking through a crowd (i know my manners there)
- sit, down, and stay (check, check, and got it)
- coming when called (yeah, i can do that. i’m very focused… wait, ooh, shiny thing! must… chase…)
- reaction to another dog (see: new year’s resolution re: bulldog)
- reaction to distraction (i’m pretty chill around loud noises and sudden movements.)
- supervised separation (can do.)
and i have to do all that without any treats during the test! i know i can do it though. confidence is not an issue here. =)
