ughh.com has a nice thread on resources for producers.
and here’s a wikipedia entry on hip-hop production. most of it can apply to other types of beatmaking too(like house and electronica)

I am reposting information i left in the comments section earlier.
futureproducers.com
a pretty good site for reference is www.futureproducers.com
you can get a lot of insight and ask questions there.

here a dipset producer makes a sample based beat on the fly. with sample based beats, people use small portions of pre-existing music and then repeat or loop those chopped portions. then they layer additional sounds with other instruments until it sounds good.
that video is just a taste of what it’s like to make a fully formed beat. there are also beats you can make without using any sample at all. electronica, some hip-hop and other styles may work without samples. you don’t need all that equipment. you can really make beats out of anything.
i mean, you can download a program called “audacity” for free and make rudimentary loops off of that alone.
also, search youtube for “pete rock” using the “mpc”. he’s a renown beatmaker. you can avoid the computer and use standalone hardware like the sp, mpc, etc. that kind of equipment is more expensive but can give you a better feel for the music when you are working on a beat.
Reason, Acid, Protools, logic, Fruity Loops, Cool Edit etc are all less expensive computer programs that will help make beats on your computer. you can obtain these programs illegally with file sharing programs(slsknet.org on the hush-hush!)
established producers will use either or both.
all best
