I didn’t find out that I was of Cherokee decent until I met a great aunt when I was 8 years old. The woman was impressive. She set me the task of finding out more about our people and going to visit the reservation then. I’ve managed to get to Cherokee, NC during the off season once. Unfortunately there was a foot of snow over night before I was to make it up a steep mountain road to meet an elder. I don’t consider my promise to her kept yet.
I’ve always had a tendency to distrust books about the Cherokee culture. I grew tired of meeting “Wanna-be’s” or “Know-it-all’s”. Over the last few years, I’ve talked to several native americans that have strongly recommended reading books written BY the native american of the tribe your seeking knowledge in.
