Hopefully I’ll get rid of another large load of STUFF!

I have 40 lps in my jazz collection, more or less. Most of it is not that rare, but in good condition some of it could bring in a few bucks.
There are relatively few things in the jazz collection that I won’t be able to replace with mp3 or CDs. Of these, how many do I care about enough to hang onto them? Maybe 4 or 5? If it’s rare and I loved it, I probably will hang onto it.
As I go through this collection and the others (folk, country, rock, avant garde), I’m realizing that there are some disks that I am just not going to be able to part with. At the same time, it’s nice to dump the stuff I never really cared for that much.
I’ll settle for a small, manageable collection of rare stuff I really love. Unless I can get these burned onto CDs — there must be a way to do that.
I’ve been cataloging my LPs so I know what I have to sell. This is going to take some time, but it’s good to go through them all. I have some things that seem to be rare; at least I can’t find them in the obvious places. Looking them up on the internet allows me to find out what’s worth real money, and what’s just dead weight.
Once I have an inventory, with whatever pricing information I can find, I’ll have some idea how to value the collection. It is mostly jazz (about 60%) and seventies rock (about 30%) with a scattering of miscellaneous.
I may end up keeping a small number of the discs. If there are LPs that I really loved, that are not available on CD, I will hang onto them. Since most can be replaced with CDs, I don’t think I’ll end up with a lot of them. So although my original intent was to sell them all, I’ll be content with new collection consisting of a small number of beloved, irreplaceable LPs.
I’m going to sell as much of my old stuff as I can. I started this process of selling old stuff a long while ago, before the economy went south. Now it seems harder.
Nevertheless, I intend to sell:
- my entire LP collection
- several boxes of books
- TV and TiVo sets
along with lots of garage-sale staples i.e. clothing, jewelry, furniture, tools, etc.
I’ve been gradually selling stuff off since October 2007 and have sold a lot of similar stuff at yard sales and on the Internet. I’ve sold many collectibles, health and fitness equipment, my rabbit-skin jacket, one of my drums and my entire CD collection.
I will also be giving away a lot of stuff – old VHS cassettes for instance, old software, books that cannot be sold…
I’m going to document my progress on this thread
