I am having doubts about this. I’m going to keep my eyes open for opportunities, but I’m still looking for full-time employ, too.

My sister is scoffing at me for planning to do this. A waste of money, she says. I’m too old to make it (the investment) pay off, she says (I’ll be 57 this year).
I am feeling discouraged. Is she right? Is this a foolish idea?
I’ve made more notes and am refining my basic research questions so that I can find the right institution to get the degree at. I’m also researching degree programs online, developing a bookmark list and looking into their requirements. It’s going to be tricky to get a place for this Fall; I hope I get lucky.
This is the first step in getting a PhD (or MFA). I want to develop a proposal for solving a problem I really care about. At the same time, I want it to be useful enough to someone else that they will fund my research.
