She got her driver's license yesterday!  — 1 week ago

Ack, I cried when she drove away for the first time all alone. I thought I was ready for this, but it sure made me realize how precious few days I have with her before she is an official adult.

Lucky me...  — 6 months ago

She is now 16 and doing great. I do feel lucky because I was a troubled hellion at that age. She had a job working for the Clinton campaign during the caucuses (we are in Iowa) and she saved most of the money she earned. She even wants to make a Roth IRA contribution! I am trying to get her off her butt to find a new, part-time job, but I won’t push until spring. She has a car, but she didn’t pass her driving test on the first attempt! Ooops. But that’s okay because our weather has been terrible and I prefer she not drive on these icy roads. She can try again in the spring. All in all, she is doing very well and she is a sweet kid. Yay!

Report Card  — 1 year ago

She got all As and Bs on her first high school report card! Yeah!

Invitation to spend the summer in Europe  — 1 year ago

My brother has invited my daughter to spend the summer in Germany with him and his wife next summer. She is about to jump out of her skin, she is so excited. He told her he would also take her to Sweden (where he has a vacation home) and Italy (his favorite country). I want her to go for six weeks, but she and my brother both insist it would be better for her to go for the summer (cost and the ability to submerse herself into German culture). My niece has also been invited. I have agreed with the stipulation she get all As and Bs this year and she learns German well enough to get around (I’ll teach her). This should be a great experience for her!

Oh boy, it's out of my hands now!  — 2 years ago

She got her Learner’s Permit for driving yesterday! I am equal parts proud and happy, and mortified that my baby will be driving. She wanted me to drop her off where her friends hang out after she passed the test, so I tried to let her drive there. I thought it would be cool if she could drive up in front of her friends. She majorly ran up on a curb though, and I totally freaked out and made her switch me spots. It’s funny because she is so mellow about it! I think her Dad needs to teach her how to drive…

She's 14  — 2 years ago

So far, so good. She can be a moody little tyrant, but for the most part, she is honest and can be trusted. She’s a pretty cool kid. There’s just so much to worry about!
