1. It’s one of the oldest religions still in practice, with evidences from 3000 bC. It’s also the world’s third largest religion, only losing to Islam and Christianity. It has over 700 million followers, and about 13% of the total world population. In India it’s practised by 80% of the population.
2. It’s not only a religion, it’s a way of life. Or, like hindus call, a dharma, that is the natural universal laws that humans should follow to have a happy life.
3. They aren’t polytheists. I mean, they believe in many gods, but all of them are manifestations of Brahman, the Ultimate, that is not really like the christian God. Brahman is more like a supreme being, the essence of the material universe. The principal manifestations are: Brahma, who creates the universe; Vishnu, who preserves the universe; and Shiva, who destroys the universe. The hindus are free to choose (or even invent) a form of Brahman that satisfies their spiritual desire to worship.
4. They believe in karma, the cause and effect law. It’s one of the laws of the universe. It’s the principle that good begets good and bad begets bad.
5. They believe that the soul reincarnates until it reaches the Nirvana, the ultimate goal, when your soul is released from suffering. You reborn depending on your karma – with good karma, you can reborn into a higher caste, and with a bad karma, in a lower caste or like an animal. They have a Caste System – people can’t change their social status.
6. The cow is sacred. The reason is that the cow is a motherly animal, the symbol of abudance and gives a lot in return of almost nothing. It’s a sacrilege to kill a cow, and it’s illegal. Most of the hindus are vegetarians, and some eat white meat.
