Now that’s more like it. I went to class last night and the teacher was much much better than last time. Just enough information, came around and helped everyone with corrections and offered alternatives, did poses that made sense. The music was good, he had a sense of humor. Got some good stretchy exercise – it hit the spot!



Less Cheese, Please 11 months ago

I bought a class card, and the next morning hauled myself out up and early for a “hot yoga” class. The class was packed mat to mat (New Years’ resolutions anyone?), but there seemed to be enough people around me who knew where the teacher was going that it didn’t matter that I couldn’t always tell where he was. Unathletic looking (perhaps even paunchy) men in short-shorts and lean, fit women lined up while one overachiever downward dogged and floated magically through various poses to warm up/show off. I reminded myself I was there for my own practice, and not to judge others.

The class was okay. Not the best, not the worst. Mostly, I could have done with a lot less Sanskrit (which started to remind me of journalists trying for authentic pronounciation of foreign names, like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad), fewer gods and goddesses, and less dogma accompanying each and every posture. I don’t mind a sprinkling of the cheese with my yoga, but I’d also like some instruction on the postures beyond “become the serpent.” And regardless of what you’re saying, what’s with all gabbery? We’re trying to focus over here. And did I mention trying not to be judgmental?

Still in all, it was good exercise and a good sweat and I was tired for the rest of the day.



Class Card 11 months ago

I am going to break down and buy a class card, 10 classes to be used over 90 days. A little spending generally motivates me, and heck, it’s cheaper than hiring a trainer!

The only problem is that the classes that fit my schedule are mostly at night, and that kind of conflicts with my goal of working out in the morning. I guess I could go on the weekend…
