Work with my daughter to fund $1000 in Kiva.org loans

We’ve done two loans with my daughter, and we’ve seen both the loans paid off conistently. Looks like they’ll both be completely paid off soon. At that time the money is dispersed back to the loaners (including us) and we’ll issue some more loans. Maybe put a little more money in them this time as well.

Hope to see that loan go out soon as well.

My daughter got an email letting her know the loan to the woman in Tajikistan was fully funded and went out yesterday. She was so excited. She wanted to immediately do another one, but I convinced her that we should spread these out, maybe do one every month. But it’s a great start.

$100 to help a man in Cambodia buy a cow and a calf for breeding. $50 more to complete a loan. My daughter enjoyed the process, and I just heard her talking to her friends about it and showing them the website.

We went to the bank to cash in her savings bonds, with the intention of using some of that money. We found out that the bonds take 13 years to mature now. I thought it was seven. Rats. So that idea fell through.

So I made a deal with her, and we’re going to fund the first loans together – $100 each. We have our Kiva account. Now we just have to pick who to give it to.

Goal: Get the money transferred in this week, and select our first recipient next week.

She’s a little capitalist, and loves to think she’s rich with 3K in the bank. We’re going to start slowly, with $100 to invest, and take it from there.

I’m going to sit down with my daughter and encourage her to use some of her savings to help other people. I will guarantee her micro-loans, so there is no risk for her. She has several thousand dollars sitting in savings and could put some of that to a lot better use.
