TayLora

just went out and picked some red potatoes, some white onions and some baby carrots, along with some basil and rosemary! TayLora is sooooooo stoked as this is her first time as a gardener that she is old enough to appreciate it.. and boy is she ever! She is annoyed that the rest of us aren’t jumping around like fools too:)She keeps repeating “I’m sooooooooooooooooooooooooo happy!” lol
She is already planning next years beds and what seeds she is planting. Cukes are definately making the list! I really would love to do some heritage seeds next season so I am going to connect with my friend Mergret (www.downtotherootsmagazine.com) who has a crazy amount of heirloom seeds and see if I can work out a deal with her! :)
Can’t wait till we can harvest some more! Hopefully I’ll be able to convince Bug she needs to wait!

mostly everything

is looking great! However the ants have moved in and are wreaking havoc on my beets!:( I hoep they aren’t doing the same to my potatoes under the ground.. that would suck! anyone know how to deal with ants that doesn’t include poison?

OMG!

My potato plants are getting HUGE! I hope there is a TON of potatoes under there! I forgot how pretty potato plants are:) Can’t wait till they blossom:)
Tomatos are coming along great, carrots are finally recovering from the SHEEP ATTACK! radishes and turnips are looking like they should:) Habenaro and jalapenos looking great! still not calling this goal done till it is harvested though!

WOOHOO!

I know it is lame to some… but to see the potatoes coming up.. to bite intot the first ripe tomato and sharing it with Dare is just blissful:) I forgot how much I loved gardening and growing vegetables. I grow flowers every year.. but there is just really something amazing about producing your own food:) I love it!

SPROUTS!

Yay! Everything is coming along slowly but surely;)

Nearly done!

got the poly on the greenhouse and got some raised beds built! woohoo! Hopefully a couple more days and it will be finished! We wanted to build a nice wooden fence or a willow waddle fence around the garden area, however that would take away from the time we have to accually work on the garden so i took some of the fencing panels and placed them around the area to protect it from most of the critters. Doesn’t look to nice but once we have time we are going to replace it with the wooden one and expand the area a little;)
Here is a pic of part of what is done so far- this is the view from the side.. (the one I took from the front looked too blurry to post)But I will try to find time to take a new one today:)
All my seeds are planted though a few of the flowers I bought from the greenhouse look a little ill… I think they got overwatered as we were ALL watering them making sure they were taken care of.. ie: Loving them to DEATH:)

I also found my seed potatoes! Not the kind I wanted.. but they seem to be the only ones left in town, so they will have to do.
I am so pleased we have gotton so much accomplished and on time! My back is so sore from shoveling a whole truckload of dirt but it will be worth it!

taking off

like madd! little sprouts everywhere! I didn’t think they would grow so fast being stuck indoors- but my plantings are all off and running! .. now to keep them that way! Been a long time since I tended anything other than flowers and herbs:)
Got a price in town for some dirt for raised beds and being I can plant till I build them.. and till it gets warmer I won’t bring the dirt in till next week I figure. Dare and I plan to go out today and get some built and get the greenhouse finished. We were supposed to get some poly from friend for the greenhouse but they weren’t home when we went to pick it up. Being excited and not wanting to drive back into town this weekend- we blew the 50 bucks and got a new roll.
Dare spent some time yesterday roping off a section of yard where we figure we are going to want everything- i am happy with his thoughts on how things should go. Going to take some time for sure though! Sooooo much mess and now that I have a graveyard of appliances..:( We tried to move some of the farm equipment yesterday by hand being the tractor is broken:( Didn’t go too well… maybe they will just have to be lawn ornaments?

Seeds Planted!

Dare and TayLora got all the seeds for my garden started yesterday in containers.. no way in hel there is any chance of planting them outside! We are in the middle of a blizzard right now with a warning of another 15 cm of snow:( I know it won’t last long and my fields can always use the extra moisture but holy cow! I feel like I should be singing Yule songs around the bonfire and drinking hot toddies.. oh hey.. that isn’t the worst idea ever:)lol
Anyways all my herbs, veggies (other than my potatoes)and flowers seeds are all planted and I will definately wait to get them outside when it is safe of frost.. never mind half a foot of snow:) lol
Dare was working out a few drawing on paper to see how I might get things set up out in the front yard where I am going to keep the greenhouse and the raised beds.. he’s got some good ideas. I can’t wait to try them out and see if it all comes together!:)

not sure where to put this entry

I wanted to put it under the self sustainablity as it definately would fit there, but without a greenhouse up north and with all this extra cold, a vegetable garden wouldn’t be possible without a greenhouse. So! Anyways:)
I promised pics of the greenhouse- so here it is! Just the frame is up till the bad weather stops. Dare and taylora re-constructed alot of the wood on it as some of it was rotton- I think they did a great job and I can’t wait to get the door on it and get the rest of it covered! I already have plans for how many tables I need in it and what is going to sit where:)

hhmmm

an accual “vegetable garden” isn’t looking too likely this summer again. With all the snow and cold weather there has been no time to prep the ground before it’s time to plant. I did buy pepper plants and a couple pumpkin as well as tomato. I bought seeds for onions, carrots, radish, LOTS fo herbs – I can’t find seed potatoes ANYWHERE:( Though there is one more place I can look. I really home I have the time/energy to pull it off. As much as I want it the focus of my gardening goals lies with the Midnight Garden this year. I will get my herbs done as usual.. would just be nice to have the whole vegetable things going on- been too many years without it!
