bike, lift, repeat 20 months ago

biked to work every single day this week. the weather and my schedule came together perfectly. also got in two lifting sessions at the gym. I decided against a long ride this morning as my hamstring is feeling a little strained and I’ve done a lot of commuting mileage (compared to what I had been doing) these past two weeks. my goal is to give my knee and legs adequate rest so that I can continue commuting and then ease into long rides on the weekends.

i love to ride my bicycle 20 months ago

I biked to work a whopping 4 times this week! and this morning, I did my first “long” ride of the season, ~15 miles on MLK.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T, what the heck does that mean to me? 23 months ago

trying to figure out what to call this goal really got my thinking all out of whack. I don’t want to just go to the gym more or eat less sugar or whatever. framing goals that way feels superficial to me. they don’t get to the root of the issue for me. doing more and more yoga over the years has really helped me to connect what I do to/with my body and how it makes me feel. stay up past 10pm, whether out or just watching tv, and I don’t sleep well. overeat on one night and feel bloated for days. my body and mind can only do what I fuel them to do by putting in the right components-physical, mental, emotional, what have you. conversely, I obstruct my body, actually keep myself from feeling good, with the things that I do. how messed up is that!? that would be like someone who wants to run the 100 in the Olympics strapping on a 200lb backpack. why would they do that to themselves? likewise, why would I do things that make me feel crappy or not do things that would improve my life? if this body belonged to someone else, I wouldn’t treat it the way I do. I would show them respect. which is the very thing I need to start doing for myself. now there are certain concrete steps that I plan to take, but all within the framework of respect. what’s going to get me to the gym on a daily basis? remembering why I’m doing it. so here’s the list of subgoals:

(1) Visit the gym daily
(2) Practice yoga daily
(3) Cut back on sugar, especially before bed
(4) Walk to and from Market (instead of the bus) on days when that’s possible
(5) Attempt biking to work beginning in March
