Good next step after putting in my own barrettes

Okay, I was one of those people who never got their hair cut forever. That girl in fifth grade who sat on her own braid. And my mom always did my hair. My mom brushed my hair after I washed it and “did” it every day for school. She would put it in ponytails or braids or barrettes or whatever was the style that day.
I literally did not know how to put a barrette into my own hair until I was in my twenties because my mother had always done it for me. And that was a chore! One I don’t think I have entirely perfected yet. I can do a ponytail pretty good by now. I think I was 18 when I first started doing those for myself.
I would love to be able to french braid my own hair. I am a nurse and it would be nice to have an “easy” style to keep my hair out of my face.
I really don’t want to cut my hair short out of desperation. I want to be able to take care of it for myself. I got one of those Hairdini braider things. I hope that isn’t cheating on this particular goal. My arms get so tired doing it!
