learn bass

Instead of always wishing I knew how to play the bass, or thinking that I could never figure out one of those “teach yourself the bass” books, I now have the basics down.

My last lesson was today; I have a choice of working on it on my own or going back to lessons later. But either way, the goal would be not “learn bass” but “practice bass” or “get better at playing the bass” or “join a band” or something more extensive.

I am SO GLAD 43things got me to realize this life-long dream of learning the bass. What I decide to do next with this instrument is up to me.

After the end of my third lesson yesterday, I was definitely playing the bass, like for real, and it was actually pretty fun.

It helps so much that:

A. I have a decent ear
B. I can read music
C. I have a firm grasp of music theory, including things like the circle of fifths, and can transpose things pretty well in my head.
D. I practice

I might be able to pull this off!

I will be taking bass lessons while my daughters take trombone. This is great. It means my husband is off the hook to take the girls to trombone, so it’s a win for him. And I don’t have to take extra time out of my life for my lessons. And it’s all centralized at one location, one (probably high, but we’ll survive) billing.

If I don’t start weekly lessons by October, I’m going to take this off the list for now. Fantasizing that I’m going to learn is not learning.

Since he never answered his phone, ever. Now I have to wait for him to resond to email.

I called Dean, but he doesn’t have an answering machine or voice mail, so I guess I have to catch him when he’s home.

I bought a bass and an amp from a high school kid today. I guess the next step is learning to play the thing.
