I just got a Russian dictionary and teach yourself book-guess this has been added to the list!

So languages I want to know:

French, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, German, Russian, Spanish, Italian, and Japanese, and Icelandic :)

Advanced: Danish and French

These two are my ‘best’ languages, I have quite a lot of info on them and should really work to improve them both.

Intermediate: Swedish, Norwegian

I was watching the Swedish series Wallander, I’d quite like a basic textbook as I know Danish and have absorbed some Swedish but can’t speak it, same with Norwegian although I’m more interested in Swedish.

Basic: German, Spanish, Italian

I have a German tape set- two in fact which I could use to study, and quite a few text books, general books as my family studies German

Spanish-I just got a novella in Spanish which I’ve already read in English, but think I’ll use the BBC Steps programme which I’ve done before.

Italian- I have a little book of basic phrases and can use the BBC steps programme.

Complete Beginner: Japanese, Russian and Icelandic
Russian I have a teach yourself book, the other two I’m not sure how to approach.

bits and bobs 16 months ago

I have some little slivers of languages, and a good basis that I’d really like to improve, it would be wonderful to speak them all properly and to add some more to the mix.

Languages:Danish good basis, can speak well, but not when things get complex

French- I understand and can read far more than I can say or write which is really frustrating. I had a job this summer working with French kids which I’ll probably do next year as well and it would be really great to stun everyone with some eloquent sentences.

German- I have extremely basic German, which I would like to work upon, I have no great desire at least at the moment to be majorly fluent as grammar is a killer, but I would like to be able to use the little I know better, so my knowledge isn’t so patchy. Similarly with Norwegian and Swedish which are quite like Danish but involve a lot of wrangling to make them fit from what I know of Danish, would be nice to have a good grasp of all three languages.

Equally I would love to know Icelandic and Japanese.

But altogether that’s kind of a scary list. Need to think up some definite goals for each language and then figure out how I’m going to put it all together.
