When I said I trusted my father’s reccomendations, I was lying. This 430 page “thriller” took 200 pages to finally pick up. I will admit, I did enjoy the second half of this murder mystery – but it takes two halves to make a novel, right?

Every one suspects himself of at least one of the cardinal virtues, and this is mine: I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known.
On numerous occasions, my dad would make reference to this line and say how he related to this quote when he read it as a “young lad”. So naturally, I had to check this out. It was an interesting look at America in the 1920’s. In addition to the entertaining story, I just generally liked Fitzgerald’s style (I underlined numerous parts of the text).
As usual, my father failed to disappoint.

...the first time you fall in love, it changes you forever, no matter how hard you try, the feeling never goes away.
Well, every teenage girl in America is obsessed with this movie. Being an eighteen year-old in love for the first time, with someone who I’ll be separated from by this time next year, it did strike a chord. It was a very sweet story, and yes I will admit, made me cry a little bit. A really quick, easy read that I finished in a day. Perfect for the menstruating woman with some chocolate on hand.

A really interesting story. I wasn’t too crazy about the beginning, but I liked the ending in a logical, realistic sense. The story was very well constructed and thought-provoking.
