I suppose that I can believe that eliminating Dumbledore at this stage in the saga was a logical thing to do, if you look at the pattern which as emerged throughout Harry’s life. It seems very evident that Harry is supposed to stand alone against Voldemort, as he’s lost just about every significant adult in his support system; his parents, his god father, and now his mentor. However, I am still heartbroken over the whole thing and am hoping against hope for a Gandalf-like resurrection. The second most gut wrenching thing for me about the situation was that my all time favorite character was the vessel of his demise. I like Snape because he was (is?) a complex character. He’s painted like a villian and in many ways he is, but as much as you want to hate him you must accept him as one of the good guys (at least, you did). I think that confirming everyone’s suspicions and making him evil in the end is a rough blow to what I thought was a very well developed character, and I’m hoping that Rowling has something up her sleeve that isn’t so transparent. For my part, I believe that when Dumbledore said “Severus, please” at the end he was actually asking Snape to kill him. I also don’t think that Dumbledore would have trusted him if there was any chance that he would go bad, and I think that everyone who believes that Snape is evil at the core will be sorry (just like Harry and the gang!) for doubting Dumbledore’s sound judgement.
