Being more sociable at work

I recently started this job. And since it’s focused on customer service, it requires you to be sociable. The problem is I’m not very good at being sociable, but I need this job for now. I get really nervous and don’t know what to say when dealing with strangers and customers. Or I will just say a few words and there’ll be an awkward silence.
I am usually a quiet person who stays home a lot. Compared to my co-workers, I seem to be lacking in experience too. So that really doesn’t help. I don’t have a lot to talk about. I’m just getting by in this job, but want to be doing better. I don’t want to be seen as some weirdo who isn’t very sociable. Any ideas on what to talk about, and ways to overcome my social handicap?
