Talking to the in-laws

My husband is from North Africa. His first language is Arabic and his second language is French. I went to visit his family in Tunisia a couple of summers ago and communication was a problem. They could speak some English and that was mainly the language we used to communicate, but I think it would really help to learn French. Learning Arabic is another goal. However, I know that French would probably be easier to learn than Arabic, especially since I already have basic knowledge of Spanish. I know that French is VERY different from Spanish, but I have heard that it is easier to learn a second Romance language once you already know one of them.
