I teach English for Speakers of Other Languages in Northern Virginia. The majority of my students speak Spanish. I took 3 years of Spanish in high school, but I really didn’t take it seriously then. I also took about 5 semesters of Spanish in college and still I am greatly lacking when it comes to speaking the language. This skill would not only help me in teaching my beginning level ESOL students, but I would also be better able to communicate with their parents. I think that in order for me to really become fluent, I would have to spend some time in a Spanish speaking country. I use what little Spanish I know and I hear Spanish spoken around me on a daily basis, but I am still far from being fluent.
