yay, can do 4 marine syle ones now. 1 max – 4 max in a week isn’t bad.

Seems to be some discrepancies among people as to what constitutes as a proper pushup.
Most people recommend the ones where your upper arms are parallel with the ground and elbows at 90° angles with hands set wide on the ground.
But if you go to the marines webpage, they do the ones where you go almost all the way to the ground with your chest. and your arms set just a little more than shoulder width apart.
Some civilian exercise sites will discourage the “marine” style pushups saying it’s not safe to go much past 90° (of course I understand now that it might be unsafe if you haven’t worked on your shoulder stabilizers, but the sites I have seen generally don’t indicate that).
I have been doing the 90° ones. I was actually able to do my first marine style pushup today (though I can only do one).
The marine ones are a bit more difficult to do. But I also noticed in order to do it right, my arms have to be under my shoulder joints more. They feel more more powerful than the 90° ones, like I’m working more muscle groups. I think the 90° affect my deltoids more, I never really feel it in my tricepts when I do those.
I also learned about doing negatives and half motion pushups. Even if I can’t do a bunch of full marine pushups, I could do the negatives and develope some control on the way down and do half pushups to start developing my range of motion.
The more you know!
This week is gonna be killer. My arms felt like jello after doing the whole series today.
I have a tendency to put my arms a little bit out in front of me, working more of my upper chest. I shifted my arms to work my middle chest more near the end of the final series because I was running out of steam. I could feel the difference. It’s not nearly as hard now.
Doing the 21-25 group now. Can top out at about 33 or so.
I haven’t been able to do too many more pushups yet, but I can feel that they are stronger now. I can do them slower with more control.
My shoulders joints don’t feel as instable as before either.
Well, thrid day of actually doing the pushups according to the plan. Technically it’d be day 5.
My pushups feel a little stronger now. I’m still able to max out on the last set. We’ll see what happens next week. lol. Been doing some scapula exercises for my shoulders.
did whatever it said to do for day 2.
This time seemed a little harder this time around, but I was still able to do the max pushups for the last set wihtout falling over. I probabaly could have cranked out two more but that would have been pushing it just a wee bit.
Already did it. The first day’s program.
Talk about a wake up call, that kicks the pants off a coffee.
I tried to do some pushups yesterday, but I was still too sore from training on friday.
I got 12 out before my arms turned to jello.
I’ll wait until I recover first.
There’s a variety of reasons I want to do this. But here are the main two.
1 my wedding is coming up, and I want to be in better shape when I wear the dress.
2 I just started karate a year ago. Every year we start over again with the basics as we get new people. So I’m currently not experiencing any spurts of new growth except for some minor tweeking and trying to perfect previously learned techniques and stances.
I decided to build on some basic exercises so I will be ready to learn some new things when the time comes. It wouldn’t hurt to gain some extra muscle on my upper body anyway, anything to increase my baseline metabolism is plus.
Any reccomendations? I can already do standard 12 pushups alright, but they could be stronger. I usually put on muscle fairly quickly, but I also have a tendency to not know when I’m over doing things until 1 or 2 days later. Any tips to make my knuckle pushups better is a plus too! (I hate those things, but I should start doing them.)
I ideally I want to be able to do pushups so well that when they call on me for an exercise. I’ll do a fast/slow push up exercise. Two push ups slow and controlled and one fast, repeat as undesired. Or alternately, two fast pushups, then one slow, and repeat. It know it sounds evil, but I’ll save that exercise for a ‘special’ day.
I have karate tonight, so I’ll see how good I’m feeling after it to try to practice. If I’m too drained (the room’s about 85-90°F all the time), I’ll start this first thing tommorrow!
