The Arrival!
This took a bit longer than anticipated, since there was something funky with the ones we initially ordered and we decided to return them for a different, better brand.
They just arrived and I now have a beautiful, shiny 500GB iomega Hi-Speed USB 2.0 desktop hard drive in front of me.
Easy as pie to hook up (love the blue light!) and I’m now backing things up – it’s a hungry, hungry drive. Feeling better already.

My brother and I both wanted one, so the plan was to go down to Future Shop today and nab a couple, but it turns out we’ll collectively save a couple of hundred bucks if we order online, so we’ve done just that. Woot! They’re on their merry way. 500 gigs! A present to myself.
On another computer based note… the CPU of the one I found was making repeated beeping noises when I tried to boot up & nothing else happened. I went online to decode those particular beeps and found a translation manual that said it was the ‘RAM is misaligned’ beep, so I pressed on it & presto! It worked like a charm. Too bad the person who decided to junk their entire system didn’t do that.
Now all I have to do is crack through the password, and I think win xp pro has a glitch that will let me boot from a win 2000 floppy & get the whole system running without having to wipe & reload the drive. Coooooool.
- in case I get my account flagged in NW for being a hacker… I’m not, thumb to the sky please? :)

Not backed up
I haven’t backed up my computer in 2 years, almost to the day. I should know better – that was after my hard drive went kaput and the only reason I didn’t lose everything was because I have a friend who’s a tech god.
Now I’m in the same position. If something (whispering. shuddering.) happened to my computer, I’d be pretty devastated. Writing, photos, e-mails, journals, contact info, video clips of Isak—a lot of the other things I could replace, but not those.
I want to get a bigass external hard drive to back up my system. I also want to use it to store all the current disks I have cluttering up the place: previous back-up disks, zip disks, floppy disks…
I don’t currently have a functioning CD burner (which I also want to rig up again) but I love the idea of such a simple back up system, and they’ve really come down in price. I might as well get one to protect the priceless.
