I finally utilized my ancient, unused La Senza gift card for this purpose. Nobody shook their head sadly when I asked if it was still valid and admitted that I hadn’t had a proper fitting in years and years and years (echo fading).
A lovely and very sympathetic lady with a trusty measuring tape wrapped around her neck assisted me, starting with boring beige (less distracting for a proper fit – plus she showed me a great strap trick I hadn’t known about) and then once we’d found the best style it was onto choosing the flavor.
I went with one in dark blue and black lace with a wee sparkly and a funky black and white leopard with hot pink lace, because buying a second was half off and damnit, I need something unfrumpy. I also picked up a fistful of black and lacy things (in a comfortable M rather than a meh fitting L) because it’s high time to weed out the old drawers from my drawers.
Also – a surprising turn in underwear-land… according to the aforementioned measuring poohbah I have gone down a whole cup size! I haven’t been a C… um, ever, except briefly when I was on my way to a traumatic teenaged D / DD.
For decades I’ve contemplated reduction surgery, but wanted to leave well enough alone until they’d at least been used for their intended purpose (they still are, but at the tail end). I can’t figure it, but I’m not complaining. Frankly I’m shocked and thrilled and MUCH more comfortable now that I have something that fits properly.
This was meant to be a shorter breast-fest, but there it is. And the girls are smiling.
A nudge to anyone who has a hard time with this and has put off the dreaded fitting and bra shopping for too long – go get sizing help from a sales person. They know what they’re doing and you can avoid the endless attempt-and-failure changeroom trauma – it was SO quick and easy with help from a pro. Waiting years and constantly doing the backstrap shuffle can easily be a thing of the past.
