LEARN TO PLAY THE TIN WHISTLE

These were marches so they’re very simple. I used notes so want to start playing them without notes before moving on to the jigs reels and hornpipes. Eventually I want to be able to play South Sligo tunes, ie FAST. The main thing is for me to try to practice regularly and often, even for 5 or 10 minutes, but several times a week. Once a week or less isn’t enough I think.

My whistle has been lying there untouched after playing it for the first time. I was on the way out last night and I stopped and played 3 tunes. It took about 5 minutes. I was surprised how quick and easy it is to practise so I am going to pick it up more often.

Monday I played ‘The Dawning of the Day’ and ‘Roddy McCorley’ very badly using notes. Think I need to go back to the scale then get these tunes off without notes. Third tune will be ‘Whiskey in the Jar’. Plan is to get a few simple marches off without notes and then get notes for reels and jigs from my brother and if I can ever play them at full speed join in a few sessions.
