New camera?

We currently have a 2 megapixel, 2x zoom digital camera + additional 2x lens, of the point-and-click variety. We’ve been looking at getting a better camera. The problem is that we don’t really use the one we have. So I want to take more photos with my current camera in the hope of being able to justify getting a new one. I hope that once this Thing has been completed that I will be on to investigating what features I would want on a new digital camera (apart from the obvious more pixels and bigger zoom). I think the first step is to start carrying the camera with me, or at least leaving it in the glove box of the car.
