I was at a meeting today for a French company that I do some consulting for. At one point in the meeting, the VP from France turned and said, “But of course, SoVeryAudreyH is not a good example because she speaks quite a bit of French.”
This, of course, is not true. I speak un petite peu, a very little bit. Even after achieving my dream of spending a year there in 2006—I was surrounded by Americans, working so hard and just didn’t get to apply myself. I did get comfortable with the basics: restaurant, grocery store, gym, polite conversation, but could never crack the next level. And the year went so fast.
But I’ve never studied formally. Just a few Alliance Francais classes here and there. So it meant a lot to me to get a compliment from a French business person, especially someone I respect so much. And it made me think that I ought to keep up my lessons. Maybe I’ll start again in the fall. It’s my birthday in the fall and another round at the Alliance Francais could be the perfect birthday treat.
