be a better daughter

I asked my mom what she wants for mom’s day and she said the usual: a new weedwacker, new rosebushes, holes dug, etc. I probably let her go on for about twenty minutes before I realized fuck it, I don’t really care what she wants, I’m getting her what I want to get her (isn’t that the joy of gifts?)

So, I’ve enrolled my mom in a Bouquet of the Month Club, for 6 months. Actual real subscriptions are like, $200, which is ridiculous as I’m a poor student living with my parents! But I got the idea from them. Every month I’ll pick out, buy, arrange, and deliver a bouquet of flowers for my mom.

She doesn’t know it yet, but I think she’ll love it.

This is for painting the baseboards with my mom!

My brother calls my mom, while he’s buying her a new tree, and says “Well, I’m glad to be doing this, especially since Sister is sleeping and reading the day away.”

My mom responded, “OH really, I thought she was helping me paint?”

I’ve been ditching work a lot lately (I’m a sub, and when you don’t go to school it’s called ‘ditching’, haha) which makes me feel like I need to contribute to the household by cooking, cleaning, or hanging out with the dog.

Tonight I made a pot roast, asparagus, mashed potatoes, and from-scratch rolls.

Today I washed my stinky dog and cleaned up her poop (wrestling with a soapy 50 pound pitbull is not fun! Okay, it was kind of fun, but I needed a bath by the time she was clean).

On Tuesday I cooked a not-so-awesome sesame seed chicken, but everyone in my family is overworked, tired, or sick, so everyone was grateful nonetheless. Today I’m cooking classic Family Style porkchops with mashed potatoes, snap peas, and asparagus – I don’t think anything can go wrong with that.

I’m also considering offering to paint the baseboards next weekend, something my mom mentioned she has been meaning to do. Being a good daughter is good.

I need to be a better daughter. I think I’m already a good daughter, but I need to be a better greater daughter.

My dad just switched to day shift, my mom is in school again, my brother’s in school still – which means we’re all really busy. There’s less time for people to clean or cook, which are the two things I want to focus my efforts on. My dad used to do almost all the cleaning and a fair amount of the cooking…but now he’s on days.

I cook fairly often for a person my age, I think, but I want to step it up and start cooking more. My family spends a lot of money eating out, but with my parent’s up coming vacation, money is tighter than it was…

So, I want to start cooking twice a week every week. I think that should be easy enough.

Also, this semester I’m paying for my Japanese class and books as the class is for my own pleasure and is doing nothing for my degree, so it’s silly for my parents to pay for it as they’re nice enough to be paying what my scholarship doesn’t cover anyway.
