Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

get enough sleep

Sleeping in

I think the secret for me is consistency – going to bed at a reasonable hour (reasonable being 10pm during the work week), relaxing after work (no work emails or calls after 6pm), and a better and healthier diet.
Of course, there are days I wake up 3 times, but I’m consistently getting more than 7 hours of sleep.

I think I can declare this goal done!

Dream on

So far, the “going to bed at 10pm” part is going fine.
I sometimes find myself reading too long – not sleeping at 10.30 – but it’s not soo bad.
What’s bad is I still don’t sleep through the night. I’ll wake one or two times, mostly at 3 or 4am.
I’ll have to dig out my trusty excel sheet and record my sleep habits better!

Working on a dream

I sleep quite well now, and if I manage to get my mind of work and health problems, I even sleep through the night.

Now I’m working on my going to bed time. I try to be in bed at 10pm and read a little so I’m going to sleep at 10:30.

It’s rather hard to get used to this plan!

Getting better

What is helping me here is:

  • A nice spreadsheet Forester321 sent me to track what influences my sleep
  • No late night snacking, especially not on salty things like chips
  • Setting my intention to wake up at a time and not sooner
  • Finishing my day with something positive otherwise it will haunt me at night
  • No reading work emails at home in the evening
  • My yoga teachers mantra – “everything has been done. There’s nothing to be done right now.” (roughly translated).

Now I just have to go to bed at a reasonable hour :-)

Try again

I’ve got a cold, not bad but my sinuses are bothering me.

That messes up me sleep schedule like crazy.

Cough, sniff, whine.

At least I got some sleep.

Small discovery

2nd time of waking up at 6, this time after 7.5 hours!

I still feel very tired. Seems I have a lot of sleep to catch up :)

What I discovered:
  • I need to finish my workday with something positive otherwise it will haunt me at night
  • No reading work emails at home. I tend to make mountains out of molehills.
  • What helped: the mantra my yoga teacher uses – “everything has been done. There’s nothing to be done right now.” (roughly translated).

Sleep more? Better?

I just noticed this goal in Ks post.
That got me thinking.

I fall asleep the minute the lights are turned off.
And as I wake up every day at approximately the same time, I don’t think that I really get enough sleep.

I have no idea how many hours I sleep a day.

Seems like something to work on …
