So, I’m in school, hoping to get a degree in, well, superheroism. (Yeah, that’s a real degree, they just sometimes hide it under other titles- nursing, international relations, sociology, English even!) I have been so busy that I am neglecting some things that are important to me, and included in my overall goal of the degree, you know, saving the world. Actually, neglecting is a harsh word for a kid working two jobs and going to school full time. (Kid isn’t quite the right word either, but whatever, I act like a kid.) Anyway, a group of special needs adults came into the place I work a few weeks ago. I really enjoyed the interaction and flashed back to volunteering at the Special Olympics a few years ago. I kept thinking about how much I’d like to do it again. The next day I worked, serendipitously, the man who brought the group in returned with his girlfriend and her handicapped daughter. I could tell the woman (the daughter) was as active as possible, so I asked if they could give me any information on Special Olympics here. Within hours after I got home, I had an email. I signed up and Friday I’m there! Yay! Except for the fact that I have to get up waaaaay early and as soon as I’m done, it’s straight to class. I can fit this stuff in, but, man, am I going to have to sacrifice some of that morning laziness I cherish so much.

So, this is an evil goal to choose for myself. In many ways it’s unattainable. It’s vague. How can I meet a non-specific goal? However, I thought it was appropriate. I’ve gone back to school and when people ask me what I plan on doing, my playful answer is to “save the world.” I think we all save the world in many ways with the differences we make. I am listing this goal as a constant reminder of the good I hope to do in the world, whether through my unknown future career, or just in everyday life.
