I’ve been living in NY for two years now and I’m ready to move to the Northwest. I can cope with NYC, but I miss the openness of Washington. All of the greenery here is forced. Even the wilder parts of Central Park seem groomed and arranged. We’ve traveled through the Catskills and upstate towards the Canadian border. History is so embedded in the East Coast that it’s impossible to walk anywhere without imagining the many people who traveled before you. For me, it emphasizes the lack of privacy I feel here. There are still places in the Northwest, where the trails are relatively unused, and I can reimagine what it must have been like to be some of the first humans to walk inside those forests.
