Life, circumstances and the limitations of how much can actually get done in real time have pushed this goal to next year:((( I hate that! Having bought the book and taken a mini course, I thought we could get started this season (at the dream house in-the-rough, in the east.) Not so.
By the time I get over there the season will be underway, the renovation timeline will have to take priority and, setting up the SFG is a lot of initial work – especially since we need to find alternatives to the recommended ‘magic’ soil mix. We’re all-about sustainability and some of the ingredients are Not. Plus there’s the issue of compost. We want to use our own. That way we’ll know what’s in it. (No matter where you are, municipal compost has questionable ingredients.) We will not have generated enough personal compost to get use this growing season.
So, the plan is to build the SFG boxes in the Fall. We’ll begin to gather the ingredients for our alternate ‘magic’ soil mix. Then we’ll be ready to start spring 2013.
In the meantime, I will console myself with starting herbs in pots, tomatoes in cages, perhaps a rhubarb patch and an asparagus plot, ... maybe even some berries.
